A STUDY ON THE ADHERENCE OF ORAL STREPTOCOCCI TO HYDROXYAPATITE BEAD

Abstract
The adherence of 3H-labeled Streptococcus mutans 10449 cells to spheroidal hydroxyapatite(HA) beads was studied. The adherence equilibrium occured within 2 hrs. The number of cells adhering to SHA was 50% less than those on HA bead. When the assay was per-formed with non- heated saliva at different temperatures, 20% more cells were found to ad-here to SHA at room temperature than at 4C. This indicates the release of labeled DNA from bacterial cells possibly lyzed by lysozyme at the higher temperature. It was observed that saliva from different subjects had varing effect on bacterial adherence to HA. Use of saliva adsorbed with homologous bacteria decreased S. mutans adherence by 3896, indicating the presence of salivary agglutinin in aquired pellicle formed on HA. The desorption experiment of adhered bacteria confirmed the previous reports that the adhesive sites on HA bead for S. mutans were different from those for S. sanguis and that S. mutans could enhance the adherence of S. sanguis but not vice versa.
